THOR
Name: THOR
Age: 7
Sex: Male
Weight: 80
Breed: Great Dane Mix
Reproductive: Neutered
Vaccinations: Fully Vaccinated
My Story:
Thor was dumped in the middle of an orchard. He took refuge under a stationary red boxcar used to pick oranges. When Thor was first spotted by a volunteer feeder, he was limping from his hind leg and was nothing but skin and bones. Thor was in the middle of nowhere, where it was almost impossible to survive. He endured abandonment, rain, freezing temperatures, hunger, and loneliness. The volunteer started feeding Thor, but he disappeared. He was nowhere to be found for two weeks. The volunteer feeder imagined the worst but never stopped leaving food for him. One day, Thor returned, but he was badly injured. He had a huge wound on his back. It looked like someone had taken a machete and slashed him. Thor couldn’t have been in a more vulnerable state. To make matters worse, it looked like he hadn’t eaten in the two weeks he’d been gone. He could barely walk, he had no energy, no fight left in him. Luckily, Thor was caught and secured. He was taken to the vet for treatment. Upon examination, the vet reported that Thor’s body was covered in wounds. He had scratches, scars, and lesions all over his body, legs and ears. His body told a story of physical abuse and trauma. Thor did not know it yet, but thanks to the compassion and love of the Bakersfield Strays, his life was about to change forever.
About Me:
My name is Thor. I’m currently being cared for by the person who found me in the orchards and fed me. I stole her heart because she knew that I was just a giant gentle who was scared and didn’t trust people. I used to run away from her, but now I am slowly walking towards her. My heart has so much love to give and so much love to receive. I wag my tail uncontrollably because it’s the only way I know how to show my excitement and love, for now. I love giving my foster mom kisses and smelling her hair. I love looking into her eyes because I know I can trust her. My foster mom is patient and gentle with me because I still get scared and run away from sudden movements, loud noises, or unexpected touches, but I’m learning to trust. My collar paralyzed me the first time I wore it, but I realized that it was not there to hurt me! I don’t venture out of my giant kennel too much because I feel safe there. I love my giant bed and blankets. Sometimes I’m brave enough to go out into the front yard with my foster mom to see the new world I’ll be living in, but then I run right back to my kennel. It’s a process, but I know I’ll get there. I love food and snacks! I forget that I don’t have to steal or hide food anymore, so I still have that habit. If my foster mom leaves a bag of treats unattended, I grab it with my mouth and run away to hide it. I’m also learning that I don’t have to worry about food anymore. I’m just a quiet and gentle boy, I think one day I’ll love to go for walks. I also like to be vocal; I howl and talk to my foster mom. I like to fall asleep on her lap and put my chin on her hands. I know how to love and be grateful, I just need patient parents who will give me the time and space to learn how to be a normal dog again.

Rescue Partners
One of the most critical needs for our team are partners with the ability to help house Bakersfield Strays dogs upon being picked up. We have limited space and ability to hold them for long periods of time and our expertise is more generally suited for partnerships with larger private adoption agencies that can become a liaison between us and the forever homes of the dogs. We do have a process for becoming a partner that ensures they are going to remain happy and healthy in loving homes. If you are interested in helping us overcome this crisis and you have the ability to facilitate the adoption process n our behalf, please apply to become one of our valued partners. You can find the steps to doing so at the link below.
